El Museo Canario was founded in 1879 by a group of intellectuals led by Dr Gregorio Chil y Naranjo, and it occupies the house that Chil himself bequeathed to the museum. Since 1984 it has focused on the pre-Hispanic archaeology of Gran Canaria.

Its permanent exhibition, spread over 11 rooms, is devoted to the island's aboriginal population from the beginning of the Common Era to the 15th-century conquest: settlements, economy and funerary practices. It is a good visit before touring the island's archaeological sites.
