The Casa de Colón stands where the old Casa de los Gobernadores (Governors' House) once stood, on the spot where the city was founded in 1478. The current building was created in the 1950s by joining several neighbouring houses in neo-Canarian style, around courtyards.

The museum researches the history of the Canary Islands and their relations with the Americas, and it is also the Museum of Fine Arts of Gran Canaria, with works on loan from the Museo del Prado. Columbus stopped at Gran Canaria in 1492 to repair one of his ships.
