The Castillo de la Luz began as a three-storey tower at the end of the 15th century and was enlarged in the 16th century with an artillery barrier and a wall. It is the oldest defensive fortress in Gran Canaria.

Since 2015 it has housed the Fundación de Arte y Pensamiento Martín Chirino, devoted to the Gran Canaria-born sculptor, winner of the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas (Spain's National Prize for Plastic Arts). The restoration left original parts of the castle exposed.
