What to Do in Las Palmas on a Cruise Stop
By Raquel · Born and raised in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the most underrated cruise destinations in the Atlantic. Most passengers who stop here for the first time are surprised — they expected a tourist beach town and find a real, living city with over 400,000 inhabitants, a colonial old town, world-class beaches and easy access to one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Europe.
I grew up here. I drive tourists around Gran Canaria every day. And the single biggest mistake I see cruise passengers make is spending their entire port stop in Las Palmas city when the island's most extraordinary sights are 40–60 minutes away by car.
Here is my honest, local take on making the most of your time — whether you have 4 hours or 10.
Must-See in Las Palmas
Vegueta Old Town
30–45 minUNESCO World Heritage historic centre. Cathedral, Columbus House, colourful colonial streets. 30–45 minute walk.
Las Canteras Beach
30 min–all day3km of protected urban beach — one of the best city beaches in Europe. Safe for swimming, cafés along the promenade.
Casa de Colón
45 minWhere Columbus stayed before sailing to America. Free museum, fascinating colonial history.
Mercado de Vegueta
30 minTraditional covered market. Fresh fruit, local cheese, Canarian mojo sauce. Great for food lovers.
Triana Neighbourhood
30–45 minShopping street and neighbourhood. Art Nouveau architecture, local shops, good coffee.

Go Beyond the City
If you have 6 hours or more in port, leaving the city is the best decision you can make. Here is what you can reach with a private driver:
Maspalomas Dunes · 45 min from port
The iconic Gran Canaria sand dune nature reserve. Like walking on the Sahara.
Roque Nublo · 50 min from port
Giant volcanic monolith at 1,813m. Panoramic views over the entire island.
Tejeda Village · 45 min from port
Whitewashed mountain village. Almond trees, traditional food, incredible views.
Puerto de Mogán · 60 min from port
"Little Venice" of Gran Canaria. Charming harbour, flowers, seafood lunch.
Arucas & Teror · 30 min from port
Colonial towns, rum distillery, basilica. Authentic Canarian life away from tourism.

Plan It by Your Time in Port
Tell me how many hours your ship is docked and I build the day around it. As a rough idea:
3–4 hours in port
Stay close to the port: Vegueta old town and the cathedral, a walk along Las Canteras beach and a Canarian lunch.
5–6 hours in port
Escape the city: the Maspalomas dunes, or up into the mountains for Roque Nublo and the village of Tejeda.
8–10 hours in port
The grand day: mountains in the morning, dunes and the south coast in the afternoon — the whole island in one go.
Whatever your schedule, I plan the route so you are always back on board with time to spare — the part cruise passengers worry about most is the part I take care of.
